Daiquiris are very popular rum cocktails and particularly the fruity ones. This however, is the Hemingway daiquiri created at Bar El Floridita in Havana, Cuba for Ernest Hemingway. His is a tart expression that includes both lime and grapefruit and he frequently ordered doubles. That earned him and his cocktail the nickname Papa Doble.
You may take your pick between a beach or an iron mine, both named daiquiri near Santiago Cuba. Jennings Cox, a mining engineer is credited for its creation when he ran out of gin and switched to rum. It was 1902 and regardless of the reason, he created a monster cocktail category that endures to this day.
Take two at cocktail hour followed by dinner.
Because of its astringent quality, the Hemingway makes a wonderful thirst quencher on a hot and humid day in tropical climes. It’s also an aperitif guaranteed to stimulate your appetite and pairs beautifully with Carribean cuisine. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention it’s great for self medication after a rough day at the office. Make yourself a doble like Papa and your cares will disappear like a raincloud over the horizon.
