Since 1963, the Bosley family has proudly operated Moonlite Barbecue in Owensboro, expanding and growing the business with each generation. First came Pappy, followed by Kenny, and now his grandson Patrick, all carrying on the family legacy. A central part of this tradition is their expertly smoked mutton barbecue, a regional favorite and a specialty they’ve perfected over the years.

Mutton at Moonlite Barbecue – Owensboro
Kentucky boasts a variety of barbecue styles, from wet to dry rubs and cuts of chicken, pork, and beef. There is one however, that’s rarely found and its culinary epicenter is the Western Kentucky city of Owensboro.
Here they pay homage to sheep, where mutton is proudly served front and center. Here, it’s a local specialty—and no, it’s not a frat house hazing ritual!
Enjoy mutton however you like—sliced, chopped, or as a rack of ribs—it’s all delicious. Can’t choose? Go for the all-you-can-eat buffet, where you’ll find a variety of barbecues including mutton, chicken, beef, and pork. Pair them with classic sides like broccoli casserole, mac and cheese, baked beans, creamed corn, their signature burgoo, and my personal favorite, banana pudding!
Each week, Moonlite Barbecue moves an impressive 10,000 pounds of mutton, between their bustling 350-seat restaurant and wholesale business. Many, like me, enjoy their meals with a glass of Purple Toad Pitmaster Reserve red wine, crafted nearby in Paducah. Mutton’s flavor is bold and not for the timid, but if you’re in Owensboro and up for a culinary adventure, visit Kenny and Patrick at Moonlite Barbecue!
